It's literally in the word - it is a listing of fans. This is a common concept, but it was popularised into an online phenomenon by the creation of an unofficial, voluntary organisation, The Fanlistings Network (TFL), in 2000, and has now expanded to listing thousands of diverse fanlisting subjects - from TV shows, to geographical locations, to musicians, etc. There are no costs to join a fanlisting (financial or otherwise); the only requirements are your name and country, and often e-mail. Fanlistings are voluntary fan projects, therefore they are usually only recognised by TFL - NOT by any official, profit-making organisations centred around the fanlisting subject itself. This is the only fanlisting checked by and listed at The Fanlistings Network for Skies of Arcadia, in the "Games" category, and then the "Computer, Console, Video, & Web Games" subcategory (check at this page).
This was another game, alongside Shenmue, that my brother in the autumn/winter of 2000 for our SEGA Dreamcast. I found the game completely magical. The concept of flying pirates was slightly surreal, but the game captured the monstrosity and hugeness of a flying three-dimensional world in the Skies above in such great detail... there had vortexes like black holes, under/overworlds, flying rocks resembling continents... enemy ships that you have to fight in a ship-to-ship combat. The different regions were amazing - you could go from an Egyptian desert to an almost cockney-like home island. The music was hushed and subtle, but instantly took you to their new worlds. I loved the side-projects too - making discoveries and understanding the flying lands for yourself.
This game was also a part of my early-teenager life, where I would come back from school - head to toe aching in social constraints and awkward physical labours, throat dry and face itching from activity - and slump on the sofa after dinner, revelling in some cosy escapism.
So if you're also a fan of this great game, then you can join this fanlisting and add your name to a growing list of people who also adore Skies of Arcadia. This was a great game that must be celebrated!
